چکیده

The carbon isotope content of dissolved inorganic carbon was measured for large cold springs in the central Oregon Cascades. Low 14C activities in some of the springs are interpreted to result from the dissolution of diffuse emissions of magmatic CO2, even though volcanic activity has not occurred in this area for more than 1300 yr. On the basis of dissolved magmatic carbon concentrations in the springs, we infer a diffuse magmatic CO2 degassing rate of 3.4 × 105 kg/yr per kilometer of arc for the central Oregon Cascades. The CO2 flux calculated from estimates of the mean magmatic intrusion rate and experimentally determined values of CO2 content in melts is consistent with that determined from our measurements of the dissolved CO2 flux at springs. Degassing cascades in a shear-thinning viscoelastic fluid.

We report the experimental study of the degassing dynamics through a thin layer of shear-thinning viscoelastic fluid when a constant air flow is imposed at its bottom. The fluid is an aqueous solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal). Over a large range of parameters, the air is periodically released through a series of successive bubbles, hereafter named c...

Hydrology of spring-dominated streams in the Oregon Cascades

Spring-dominated streams in the Oregon Cascades are often characterized by nearly constant discharge and by peak flows that occur in late summer or fall, several months after the annual snowmelt. A model is presented that can account for the temporal variations of discharge and the delay between snowmelt and the period of peak streamflow. Springs are assumed to be fed by an unconfined aquifer t...

Orographic Modification of Convection and Flow Kinematics by the Oregon Coast Range and Cascades during IMPROVE-2

This paper describes the kinematic and precipitation evolution accompanying the passage of a cold baroclinic trough over the Central Oregon Coast Range and Cascades during 4–5 December 2001 of the second Improvement of Microphysical Parameterization through Observational Verification Experiment (IMPROVE-2) field project. In contrast to previously documented IMPROVE-2 cases, the 4–5 December eve...

The structure-property relationship in a desulfurised and degassing hot work W500 tool steel

The effect of secondary steelmaking processes such as desulphurization, removal of inclusions and vacuum degassing followed by hot forging and hardening heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a hot-work w500 tool steel have been studied in details. In order to follow the progress of secondary steel making, the content of impurity elements such as S, P, O, H and N were...

Quantifying magmatic, crustal, and atmospheric helium contributions to volcanic aquifers using all stable noble gases: Implications for magmatism and groundwater flow

[1] We measure all stable noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) in spring waters in the Oregon Cascades volcanic arc and in eastern Oregon, USA. We show that in order to estimate magmatic helium (He) contributions it is critical to simultaneously consider He isotopic ratios, He concentrations, and mixing of He components. Our component mixing analysis requires consideration of all measured noble gas...
